What happens while the page loads
The instrument first shows Refreshing current Steam sample with no number. Its browser request goes to a same-origin Cloudflare endpoint, which requests the fixed Steam AppID and caches a successful response for about five minutes. Only a valid response moves into the current-number position.
What this number includes
After a successful refresh, the instrument shows one response for Steam AppID 3079210 with the UTC request time. It is a current Steam-connected concurrent sample only.
What this number excludes
It does not include PlayStation, Xbox, Microsoft Store, Epic or offline players. It is not a count of owners, daily active users or every person playing across all platforms.
Why there is no trend chart
One API response is one point, not a time series. This page does not invent a peak, average or trend from a single observation. Historical analysis requires a real, consistently sampled series.
What happens when the request fails
The current-number position changes to Unavailable. A previously recorded successful response may appear separately as stale—not current, retaining its original timestamp. It is never silently presented as a live value or replaced by an estimate.
